Gerd Couckhuyt

Minimalism and the organic are united in the work of Gerd Couckhuyt, a Belgian designer who discovered his true vocation later in life. After training and working as a mechanic and an electrician, his foray into design started in interior architecture and extended into industrial design. With his pragmatic background, function comes foremost and is followed by the inclusion of form to obtain proportion and balance in his works. The carefully balanced harmony he is known for – where minimalism is present through strong proportions, and the organic emerges in the use of sensual curves and enticing materials – is found in his Moonlounger lounge chair for Van Rossum.
